technologies
I work with technology every day in my professional and personal life and I am often asked what technologies do I use to streamline the process. As my father would say you need the right tool for the right job, and these are my primary tools
website production
- Drupal: An open source content management system that has the flexibility to delivery any site or product that myself or a client requires
- Apache: An open source web server that is used in many businesses and powers The Syracuse City School District and many other sites on the internet
- Php: An open source scripting language that Drupal and the greater web utilizes
- HTML5
- CSS
- Javascript
- GIT: Git is a free & open source, distributed version control system designed to handle everything from small to very large projects with speed and efficiency.
- Adobe Photoshop: This tool is used when mocking up a website and developing art assets, it is a costly tool that I can access to at work but if you are on a budget The GIMP is an open source alternative
- Notepad++: This is my text editor of choice, there are many options for text editors, but Notepadd++''s tabbed interface, built in macro recording and transferring makes it my text editing environment of choice
- PUTTY: PuTTY is a free implementation of Telnet and SSH for Windows and Unix platforms, along with an xterm terminal emulator. It is written and maintained primarily by Simon Tatham.
- vi/VIM: Vim is an advanced text editor that seeks to provide the power of the de-facto Unix editor 'Vi', with a more complete feature set.
productivity
- Evernote: This product is a cross platform note syncing application. It takes text, images and audio notes that are synced back and forth. Though it lacks an Ubuntu version I am well and truly hooked on this product
- Texter: Is a text replacement utility that allows me to create text shortcuts for email signatures, HTML or PHP code and many other things. It is hard to explain but the Lifehacker video explains some of it''s basic features
- gMail: What can I say about this webmail client that has not been said, not much. Labels, filters, email archives and threaded conversations all add up to making for one epic email system.
- Google Calendar: Google Calendar ties into gMail and is an online calendar that syncs with my Android Phone.
media authoring
- Adobe Premier: A non linear video editing application used when producing video pieces for the online distribution. It can take multiple video files and slice them together, insert lower thirds or still imagery and export in a number of file formats
- Adobe Photoshop: This tool is used when mocking up a website and developing art assets, it is a costly tool that I can access to at work but if you are on a budget The GIMP is an open source alternative
- Audacity: An open source cross platform audio editing tool. It can be used to splice tracks together, produce podcasts or transform audio all from within one application. Your finished tracks can be exported as mp3s ready for any computer or portable device
